Coordinate note: R1 means row 1, C1 means column 1, and C1R1 is the upper-left cell. The grid is 10×10. THE DESERT, THE BARRELS, and ENTRANCE refer to regions on the map.
Only D is on a path cell, so G can only be in the 4 northernmost cells of THE DESERT. I must also be in THE DESERT and share the region with exactly one other person — who can only be G. Therefore E can only be in the two sand cells of THE BARRELS. Cross out all sand cells except the two where E could be.The flag at C6R6 is marked X, so nobody can stand there. A must be exactly one row south of an occupied flag, which means A can only be in R3 or R10. B must be on a chair, and the only rows with chairs are R3 and R10. Therefore R3 and R10 can only be occupied by A and B; mark X on every cell in those rows that neither A nor B can use.H must be beside a flower. H cannot be in R10, because that would force both A and B into R3. H therefore has only two possible cells left: R2C10 and R5C3. Mark X on the two row-column intersections, R2C3 and R5C10.Now apply the general clues, "Exactly one person was beside a table" and "Exactly one person was beside a barrel." After ruling out R5C10, the required table-adjacent and barrel-adjacent occupants (temporarily marked V in the image) can only be in columns C7, C8, or C9. E can only be on a sand cell in C7 or C8 and cannot be beside the table or a barrel. Therefore, in C7, C8, and C9, mark X on every cell that is not beside the table, beside a barrel, or on sand. This leaves B with only the chair in R3.Since A is definitely in R10, the flag in R9 must hold one person. Cross out every other cell in C1 and R9.R1 must be G, and I must be in R2. Cross out everything in THE DESERT except the R1 and R2 section. (The rest is up to you — keep trying, and don't peek at the answer too soon!)
