A Messy Situation Murdoku coordinate map - columns C1-C9 and rows R1-R9
Coordinate note: R1 means row 1, C1 means column 1, and C1R1 is the upper-left cell. The grid is 9×9.
The general clue is "There was no empty area," meaning every region must have at least one person. The smallest region is KITCHEN, so KITCHEN must have someone in it.
G is exactly one row north of F, so F cannot be in the R1 mud puddle (nothing north of it). Likewise, F cannot be in either of the two mud puddles on R4, because if F were in any R4 mud puddle, G would have to be on the chair in R3, consuming both rows of KITCHEN and leaving no room for anyone there. Therefore F can only be in the mud puddles on R7 or R8. C and D are bound together in one room with nobody else, so C also cannot be in either mud puddle on R4. Here's why: if C were at C5R4, she would share a room with G, violating being alone with D. If C were at C9R4, D would need to occupy R3 to share the room with C, again consuming KITCHEN's two rows and leaving no room for anyone there. Similarly, C cannot be in the mud puddles on R7 or R8, because whichever mud puddle C takes, D would occupy the other row of PORCH, leaving no spot for F! Therefore C can only be at C4R1. The first person is locked in. With C and D needing to share a room, D must be in R2. E must be beside a tree, so E can only be at C9R9. No matter which mud puddle F ends up in, she and G will occupy column C3, so the other positions in C3 can be crossed out. Similarly, the other positions in R7 can also be crossed out. A, B, and H have a northwest-to-southeast relationship: A is the most northwest, H is the most southeast. And since the victim V cannot be alone, KITCHEN must contain A. The other positions in C2 can also be crossed out. Now try F's two possible positions — the rest is up to you!
